If you’re embarking on an international road trip this summer, you’ll want to make sure both your vehicle and your passengers are protected for everything from a fender bender to a natural disaster. This is where Allianz Travel Insurance comes in.
Serving millions of Americans each year, Allianz Travel Insurance offers plans ranging from trip protection to trip cancellation and even rental car protection.
In all of my international travels over the years, I have purchased an Allianz Travel Insurance plan through the airline website as an add-on at checkout. This has always been a seamless and straightforward process, and remains a great option for us multi-taskers.
Later this fall, I’ll be accompanying a friend to Calgary, Canada and have a ticket but no protection against trip cancellation, trip interruption, travel delays, baggage loss, a medical emergency, or emergency medical transportation.
My neighbor just returned from a road trip adventure in Vancouver and ended up paying $900 out of pocket for an unexpected emergency room visit. Needless to say, I am motivated to spend a fraction of that cost for peace of mind.
Finding the Best Allianz Travel Insurance Plan
Ranging from a single trip to a full calendar year with both basic and premium coverage, I visited the Find a Plan page and used the Get a Quote pop up window between several different plans, settling on an option that worked for my budget and my risk tolerance.
In addition to a travel protection plan I also selected a rental car protection plan with the idea I’ll save both time and money at the car rental counter. At only $11/day, the plan includes primary coverage for covered collision, loss and damage up to $50,000, and 24-hour emergency assistance.
If you’re traveling as a family, some plans include free coverage for kids under age 17 (read the fine print for details). The best part? Allianz Travel Insurance offers a 15-day free look period that allows you to change, exchange, or cancel your policy.
Travel Smart with the Allyz TravelSmart® App
In the past I have traveled with a paper copy of my Allianz Travel Insurance and uploaded a digital copy to the cloud. This trip, I’m planning to use the Allyz TravelSmart® App for quick access to my plans, 24/7 assistance and support, and my trip itinerary.
Pronounced “Ah-Leeze,” a combination of “all” and “ease,” the Allyz TravelSmart® app offers a simplified and accessible interface for travelers while they are traveling. If you already use the Allianz TravelSmart® app, it will automatically update to Allyz TravelSmart® without the need to download and delete anything on your smartphone.
Upon first inspection, my recently-purchased travel and rental car protection plans are front-and-center on the home screen. If the rental car company asks for verification of travel insurance, I plan to open the policy and coverage details on my phone. There’s even a “file a claim” button on the bottom of the screen.
From the Services page, I added our trip details by creating a new trip in the trip organizer and uploading our flight details for easy reference. Depending on where you are traveling, you may want to register for travel alerts letting you know when/if a travel advisory is issued by the Department of State.
Also on the Services page, you can find a hospital locator, medical translator, medical dictionary with common medical terms, and an embassy finder. I once had to find an emergency room when my son fell while traveling through Kansas and that experience was stressful enough to always want to be prepared for the unexpected.
If you do need assistance while on your trip, simply tap Assistance for a list of local emergency numbers and to dial Allianz customer service or Allianz medical assistance.
Things to Consider
Travel insurance can be complicated. Like any policy, read the terms, conditions, and exclusions carefully. If you have questions or need clarification, use the Contact Us page on the Allianz Travel Insurance website.
